Our Story

CMJ was formed in England in 1809 by leading evangelicals such as William Wilberforce (who led the fight against slavery in England) and Lord Shaftesbury. They believed that the Jewish people had to be restored to their ancient land in order to pave the way for the return of Jesus.

From the 1840s the Society built in Jerusalem a School of Industry for training Jewish believers in basic trades; an Enquirers House, a Hebrew College, and a modern hospital for Jewish people as well as Christ Church. Hospitals were established in Jerusalem, Safed and Haifa.

4 Heritage Centres in Israel

This ministry uses three of CMJ’s historic sites, including a former Baron’s Palace in Tel Aviv, to inform Israelis and visitors about the history and significance of the sites and the process which led up to the establishment of the State of Israel. Thousands of Israelis each year – including academics and political leaders - visit the centers and hear about the faith which inspired CMJ to work in Jerusalem for over 180 years.
