Today we look at the story in the Garden of Gethsemane. What isn't known so well, is how close the Garden, situated on the Mount of Olives, is to the wilderness. Only 500 meters from where Jesus went to pray the edge of the Judean wilderness began. Though Rome claimed sovereignty over this land, it was in fact no-man's land. Had Jesus desired it, he could have easily slipped over the ridge and disappeared from civilisation and the grasp of the Romans. Yet in his goodness and mercy he chooses to stay, taking on the burdens and sin of this world, for the resolution of suffering and death found in this world.
