Discover the richness of the Bible
The Rabbis rightly describe the word of God as an ocean with different depths, eddies and currents.
Each time we dive into His Word, we can have a different experience of all the richness He wants us to discover - especially if we have an understanding of the Bible's original language, biblical Hebrew. Indeed, our experience is that this offers even more vibrant colour, dynamism and three-dimensional experience.
We firmly believe that, once you've discovered it, you won't want it any other way!
Let the Word of God come to life in new ways!
The Hebrew language (Ivrit - Hebrew, עברית) is named after those who spoke it, the "Ivrim", "Hebrews" - and this name comes from Ever (עבר), the son of Shem (Gen 10:21), meaning "a region beyond" from Avar (עבר), "to cross over".
The rabbis say that Hebrew is "Lashon HaKodesh" (לשון הקודש), the "Holy Tongue", and that it was the original and only language given to Adam, until the time of the Tower of Babel. Hebrew is normally called "Yehudit" (יהודית) in the Bible because Judah (Yehuda) was the only surviving kingdom at the time.
Today, let your understanding of Biblical Hebrew help you dive deeper into all of God's Word, as the New Testament reminds us:
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16)
and Proverbs 2: 1-6:
"My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."

Better Understanding His Word
The Bible should have supreme authority over all other writings and holy texts, and yet, as the author Thomas Paine (1773-1809) once said,
"The Bible is a book that has been read more and examined less than any book that ever existed."
By learning biblical Hebrew with Dr Stephen Herring and CMJ Israel, you will undoubtedly get a taste for the deeper meanings hidden within the Hebrew language that are so often lost in translation, as Haim Nachman Bialik, a Jewish Poet (1873-1934) once said,
"Reading the Bible in translation is like kissing your new bride through a veil."
So let's lift the veil on God's Word and delve deeper into the truths he has there for us.
Every student has unique objectives and individual needs. In other words, each student is different. Each student’s course, therefore, should be unique, designed according to those objectives and needs. While my overall objective for every student remains the same, how we get there can (and should!) vary.
Level 1: Objectives
Objectives for level 1 students are to provide the student with the tools and the confidence to read basic, narrative texts in the Hebrew Bible, to feel comfortable offering grammatical and syntactical observations of the biblical texts, and to translate basic, English sentences into biblical Hebrew.
Level 2: Objectives
Objectives for level 2 students are to provide the you with the tools and confidence to read more difficult narrative and poetic texts in the Hebrew Bible, to feel comfortable offering poetical analysis, and to translate basic English into biblical Hebrew.
If the student is already comfortable translating basic English into biblical Hebrew, we will begin more advanced composition.
Level 3: Description
Translating English into Biblical Hebrew
This level is designed for those students who have had at least beginners’ level instruction in biblical Hebrew and are already comfortable translating basic narrative in the Hebrew Bible.
Objectives for level 3 students are to give them the experience and instruction in composing biblical Hebrew, in order to significantly increase their appreciation of the variety within the language and teach them to recognise some of its stylistic subtleties.
All tutorials outside the Oxfordshire, UK area will be conducted online using Skype.
